South Gate

The South Gate was originally constructed in the 14th century, however they were rebuilt in th 1450s and survive to this day. When originally built, the brick structure that can be seen from inside the town centre was apparent from both sides of the structure, but in 1520 the building was given the ashlar front, presumably to make it look stronger than it actually is.
The tower's main arch was designed to accomodate horse-drawn carriages, and the two smaller arches were for pedestrians, mainly the lower class. Today, only the large arch is still opened, and is large enough to deal with all of todays traffic.
